Ecology of microorganism Pythium oligandrum

P. oligandrum penetrates with its hyphae into cells of its host organism (yeast, fungus) and draws nutrients from the host. Based on the nutritional and spacial competition Pythium oligandrum suppresses phytopathogenic fungi.

Modes of action

  1. Mycoparasitism
    Pythium oligandrum
directly attacks pathogenic microorganism and it is using hydrolitic enzymes to destroy phytopathogenic myceliums and thus it obtains nutrients for its own compsuption.
  2. Induced resistance
    Pythium oligandrum
inhibits the growth and development of pathogenic microogranism, because it stimulates mechanisms of creating morphological and biochemical barriers in plant tissues.
  3. Growth stimulation
Pythium oligandrum induces the production of growth-stimulating substances in a plant and indirectly inceases the intake of phosphorus and micronutrients by the plant.
